Care and Planting of your RPM trees
As a new owner of an RPM premium tree we would like to suggest some planting guides for maximum long term success.Step 1
After unloading your RPM trees be sure to water each thoroughly and protect them from excessive heat or cold. Do not allow rootball to freeze or dry out.Step 2
If your trees are not to be planted for several days or weeks be sure to water the trees every 2 to 3 days (or as needed) and again immediately before planting.Step 3
Remove the plastic container in which the trees have been growing prior to planting. We do not recommend "cutting" or disturbing the rootball after container has been removed.Step 4
Do not plant trees any deeper than the level at which they were growing in the container. (See diagram below)
Step 5
The use of a photodegradable weed barrier mat, bark mulch, chemical or mechanical cultivation around your trees to prevent weed and grass competition is also highly recommended.Step 6
If the trees are to be planted in areas of heavy deer population a tree guard or similar protection device is a wise investment. (Also serves as rodent protection).Step 7
Fertilization. We recommend the yearly application of a slow release fertilizer applied around each tree either in late winter or early spring. An analysis of 27-3-6 with I.B.D.U. or similar is recommended.Soil preparation is important to the life of your plants. Contact you local County Extension for information on how to amend the soil for your location. Soil should be friable, loose and rich. Remember to water, fertilize and occasionally spray against insects and diseases.
